SolidWorks:HEARD! - Episode 463 - Solar Access Studies

SolidWorks_Heard_Logo_2012_V2_Small.png

Solar Access Studies:

This podcast covers the new SolidWorks 2014 sun light and solar access study capabilities. This new features allows for some interesting and accurate depictions of how sunlight brightens up your models! Topics covered:

- Introduction to Solar Studies

- How to add sunlight to your models

- Tricks to customizing your environment

- Creating solar axis study animations

- Accuracy of solar data

- Step by step example (compared results)

With the introduction of solar access studies in SolidWorks 2014, I was curious how accurate and easy it would be to setup a scenario of a similar solar "issue" at my own house.  My living room is situated in such a way that my TV gets sunlight on it in the early afternoon and since I had a perfect real-world scenario, I though I would put it to the test.

In addition to the ability to add sunlight to any model based on the North direction, location (lat/long) and Date/Time, SolidWorks also allows automating the sun based on either fixed time/variable date or fixed date/variable time.  This is what I was interested in testing and by modeling up my living room and the help of Google Maps, I was pretty impressed with the results.

Sunlight, in general, can give provide amazing realism to a still image as well and thanks to @solidworkscare, a great tip on adding "Accurate environment lighting" in PV360's Illumination options can give a nice view of what sunlight might look like in a clear day vs. having it off that would act similar to a cloudy day, muting the shadows.

Over the past month it has been incredibly busy for SolidWorks resellers as they hold events all over the world to rollout SolidWorks 2014 and show off all the goodies to customers.  "2014 RoadShow" this year was 7 cities for DDi so travel for the past month has been busy.

SolidWorks 2014 seems to be a huge refocus on SolidWork core, bringing enhancements and refinements to the core CAD platform.  Obviously the entire product line was refreshed but customers seems to be stoked about the core updates.

It also appears that many manufactures like Google, Microsoft and Apple now have their updated products in the channel in time for the Holiday season shopping spree.  Google's Nexus 5 has shipped, Surface 2 is out and it is iPad-palooza over at Apple.  Happy Techsgiving! ~Lou

SolidWorks:HEARD! - Episode 461 - My.SolidWorks Refresh

SolidWorks_Heard_Logo_2012_V2_Small.png

My.SolidWorks Refresh:

This podcast covers the recent updates to the new My.SolidWorks, the content aggregator that debuted at SolidWorks World 2013.   Topics covered:

- At a glance, what has changed

- Added features for those who sign in

- Navigation and sharing updates

- Mobile experience

- Impressions and suggestions

Back in February I covered My.SolidWorks in its early days and there were a number of issues including missing content and lack of support for mobile.  Today a few of these things have been addressed and it appears to be adding some useful content segments.

One major addition is mobile support.  This seems to work well and is the way I typically check the site.  Whether you are on a phone, tablet or even a smaller screen laptop, the new site scales well with it's Windows 8-like tiles, making it easy to hit touch targets with my big fingers.

Despite the new additions and increased device support, something still feels missing to me.  As many of you know, I am not considered a "normal user" but I wish I could put in my own content links too.  It seems like the content that put SolidWorks on the map on the web would be bloggers and their content is missing here.  I wish I could at least add my own feeds to the interface and make it truly the one stop for SolidWorks content. ~Lou

Mid October marks the time when the new SolidWorks product line has been launched, rollout events are underway and the jury is out of how users are responding to the new version.  This time of year is fun for me since I get to travel around to show the shinny new software but something is different this time around.

SolidWorks 2014 marks 12 versions of SolidWorks that I have done these "What's New" presentations and this year we stuck to showing SolidWorks for most of the event.  The trend in 2014 seems to be on so many little front-facing improvements and features leaving these tid-bits out would be a shame.

Since we spent the last few weeks plowing through the 2014 What's New, this issue of the tech news show will skip those news bits and focus on what we all missed over the past 5 or so weeks.  This has also been an interesting few weeks for the big three, Apple, Google and Microsoft.  ~Lou
